The 2010 POINT-IN-TIME COUNT (PITC)

DATE: Friday, January 22, 2010

TIME: 4:00am - 8:00am

IF RAIN: The Count will take place - Jan. 29, 2010

THE PIT COUNT:

After training, we spread out around the County in the early morning (4am - 8am) and count the number of people that are homeless in a particular area. We all count an area that you are familiar with.

“How do I know who is homeless?" This is covered in the trainings. Once you are ready, maps in hand, you drive and walk your area so that you can get into areas that may be hidden (behind dumpsters, alleys, bushes, etc.). We strive to ensure that our final count is reflective of the homeless street population. When finished, return your maps and tally forms to your Regional Volunteer Coordinator.

WHY WE COUNT :

  • Increased ability to prepare statistical and programmatic reports for funders, boards and other stakeholders
  • Provide agencies with important data on our homeless population - critical for federal and state grant applications.
  • Assist in funding from HUD-SHP (Supportive Housing Program). In order to receive these funds an annual count is required.
  • Assist in local and regional planning.
  • Provide an updated profile of the homeless in San Diego.
  • Benefit any organization that provides services to San Diego’s homeless.
  • The RTFH count is the ONLY region-wide comprehensive count.
  • To ultimately provide for necessary services that address homelessness issues in San Diego County
