THE COUNT :

In a nutshell, we are asking you to go out in the wee early morning and count the number of people that are homeless in a particular area. This involves a couple of things. First of all, you need to select an area, or areas, that you are able to count in via the MAP page. In general, you count an area that you are familiar with and that is close to home but you may be asked to stretch yourself a bit and count in an area where there is no one else counting. Secondly, you might be saying to yourself “how do I know who is homeless?”. Good question, and this is covered in the trainings. We have established guidelines for what to look for etc.
Once you are ready to count, maps in hand, you generally drive around an area with another person ( not mandatory to be in pairs, but we want you to feel safe ) and count. You may also want to walk around so that you can get into areas that may be hidden from driving. The intention is to get as accurate a count as possible, to look into as many places as possible (behind dumpsters, alleys, bushes, etc...) so that our final numbers are reflective of the homeless street population. And if you don’t see any homeless people in your area, you mark ZERO...that way we know you counted in an area and there were no visible homeless persons.

  WHY WE COUNT :

Provide agencies with homeless data to be used in federal and state grant applications

Assist in receiving funds from HUD-SHP. HUD-SHP provides the San Diego region with $8-12 million. In order to receive these funds an annual count is required.

Assist in local and regional planning

Provide an updated profile of the homeless in San Diego

Benefit any organization that provides services to San Diego’s homeless

Benefit the homeless of San Diego County

The RTFH count is the ONLY region-wide count carried out
