San Diego County and the city of Chula Vista are partnering in an application for $20 million in state funds to build the 96-unit Paseo del Rey affordable housing development in Chula Vista.

The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the joint application with the city at its June 25 meeting.

The item was passed without discussion as part of the board’s consent calendar, and Supervisor Palomar Aguirre thanked the city of Chula Vista and nonprofit developer Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation for their partnership.

The money would come from the state Department of Housing and Community Development’s Homekey Plus program, which is the housing component of the Bonds for Mental Health Treatment Facilities that was passed by California voters in 2024 as Proposition 1.

Homekey Plus provides public entities an opportunity to develop permanent supportive housing for veterans and people living with a behavioral health challenge, including mental health or substance use, and who are at-risk of or experiencing homelessness.
