SANTEE — With little public input at its final hearing, the Santee City Council on April 8 approved its annual action plan and authorized staff to apply for federal housing and community development funds.

The plan is required for cities seeking Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships funding, outlining how dollars will be spent to address housing, homelessness, and broader community needs.

Although Santee has not yet received its official allocation for the July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 program year, the city expects about $349,400 — roughly in line with recent years but about 7% lower than the current cycle. Applications must be submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) by May 15.

Councilmembers had already set funding priorities during February meetings, directing the largest share — $227,000 — toward ADA-compliant pedestrian ramp improvements, which help improve accessibility and safety for seniors, people with disabilities and others navigating city streets.

Among public service providers, the Santee Food Bank will receive the largest allocation at $27,410, supporting food assistance for local families facing rising costs of living.

Several other organizations — East County Transitional Living Center, ElderHelp of San Diego, Meals on Wheels, Recovery & Beyond, Santee Santas, and Voices for Children — will each receive $5,000, funding programs that range from housing support and senior services to food assistance and child advocacy.

A 30-day public comment period followed the Feb. 25 meeting, but no comments were received before the council’s final approval on April 8.

With adoption of the plan, the city will now move forward with its application to HUD.

A chart from the Santee City Council meeting of Feb. 25 shows the amounts requested and the amounts allocated to public service nonprofits.
